The people of upper Yangyang are waiting for their resettlement before they vacate the land for the construction of Sikkim University. Sikkim Government has acquired around 308 acres of land in Yangyang for the construction of Sikkim University and land donors have already received compensation two years ago from the state government but the problem persisting currently is the resettlement of the land donors by the state government.
Furthermore there are around 94 families who had donated their land to
Sikkim University and they are very happy with the government and there are no complaints against the government or Sikkim University amongst these donors.
Speaking to media local Panchayat Mrs. Tulimaya Gurung said that the
establishment of Sikkim University is a positive step towards development of the State which is welcomed by everyone including the land donors and there are no complaint against the Government or the Sikkim University. Mrs. Gurung said that State Government had assured of Granting model houses to the land donors along with drinking water and road connectivity facility to the land donors in same area which needs to be first addressed before handing over land to SU.
Government has to resettle around 94 families out of which 45 families are landless as these families have donated all land they possessed for SU.
Informing more Mrs. Gurung stated that government has also acquired 45 acres land for resettlement purpose of all the 94 land donors but due to some reason resettlement process is taking time. Mrs. Gurung further mentioned that few days back SDM South had visited Upper Yangyang during which the people of Yangang said that the people want to see SU established in Yangyang for which they are ready to cooperate with the state government in every possible ways.
Mrs. Bhagirathi Bhattarai a local resident addressing the media said that upper Yangyang people are very happy with the government’s decision
of establishing SU in Yangyang and informed that the plotting of resettlement land process has begun too. Mrs. Bhattarai appealed all the political parties across state not to politicize the university land allocation issue. If any body wants to give any statement regarding SU land issue then they must visit upper Yangyang and meet land donors to know the ground reality.
Like wise Hem Kumar Gurung, local resident informed that government
is trying to arrange drinking water facility in these areas and the work is almost done. Gurung informed that around 94 families have donated land for construction of Sikkim University whereby SU even has to provide job to the educated youths according to their eligibility in the university. Informing more Mr. Gurung stated that there are around 80 educated youths in Upper Yangyang and among them 50 youths have passed Bachelor Degree in Art’s and remaining 30 are class XII pass and the university on the basis of qualification must avail job to them.
Furthermore Mr. Gurung added that there are five educated people already working in SU where the land donors demand the SU authorities to avail these people with permanent post based on their education as well. Mr. Naren Gurung, local resident in his statement said that they do not have any problem regarding donation of land for university construction as they want development in Yangyang which will only come true after completion of SU construction benefitting the local people at large.
Government is carrying out possible initiative in construction of road connecting from Singtam Phatak to Upper Yangyang and the land donors
hopes that the resettlement process will start soon after completion of
road construction.
