As per the Copyright Act,1976 everybody has to pay music tax if anybody wants to perform in a public place.
This Act has been enforced in Sikkim on 26th April 1976 but yet to be implemented. And now the concerned department has decided to set up an office in the state as to check the strict implementation of the Act
A press conference was held today here at capital while addressing the media Co-coordinator of North Bengal and Sikkim Copyright Enforcement Wing, Niranjan Ghosh informed that, there are two type of license namely event and background license. Even people take license for one day event. The Hotel and Restaurant which uses music always needs a background license and people cannot enjoy music in public place without authentic license from the concerned department.
He further mentioned that they have office in Siliguri at present and the Act has been already implemented in North East region except in Sikkim. Music cannot be played free in public places, informed Ghosh to the media. He further mentioned that they are planning to coordinate with the state government regarding the implementation of Copyright Act.
