Sikkimese Rock band Still Waters puts up a short performance as a tribute in the memory of great guitarist Late Steve Namchyo on coming Sunday, February 12th 2012 at 14:00 hours during the RED RIBBON FEST in the TNA Ground, Gangtok.

One of the most gifted guitarists of the hills, the Gangtok born Steve Namchyo once played for New Delhi-based Parikrama. He was the lead guitarist of Route 66 and Crabh, the bands he founded. Steve died of severe pneumonia at a young age of 40 in Siliguri in July 2010. He was born in 1969.

Steve Namchyo joined Parikrama in 1994 and was its guitarist for a year. Parikrama called him one of the best musicians India ever saw. Parkrama’s website reads, “Stephen Namchyo or Steve as he goes, is one Guitar player of exceptional feel and control … and the whole of North East India can vouch for that. With us though for only a few months in the winter of 1994-95, he left us impressed with his style!”

For Parikarama, he had first played Panama, a score from Van Halen’s album 1984. Panama remains one of their most recognised numbers.

Namchyo also founded County Revival and The ButtHeads before shifting to Kathmandu. Before he fell ill he was a regular performer at Little Italy.

A familiar face in the rock music circuit, Steve was fondly called Ustaad by everyone. His students looked upon him as a father figure. Little Italy owner Karma Zimba told on his demise that “He is part of Sikkim’s history in rock music.”

The leaves behind wife Pemba and two daughters.

Coming Sunday’s performance will be done by Still Waters, a band formed in 2001. It is one of the most successful rock bands in India. Among its many achievements is the nomination for Best Indian Band.

The Still Waters team includes:

Ananth Pradhan – Vocals
Sonam Lachungpa – Lead Guitars
Vishal Luitel – Rhythm Guitars
Netra Kharga – Drums
Suman Karthak – Bass & backing vocals
