Sikkim: National Environment Awareness Campaign at Kabi

Gangtok, May 18, 2012:

The National Environment Awareness Campaign 2011-12 on the theme “Forest for Sustainable Livelihood” was organized by the Endeavors Organization, a Kabi based NGO, which was duly sponsored by the Ministry of Environment and Forest Government of India, supported by the ENVIS FEWMD Government of Sikkim. The said programme was launched at Kabi Lungchok-the sacred grove of Kabi.

In fact, the organization is working for conversation of grove since 2008 with the promotion of grove for eco-tourism and sustainable benefits of local community with the sub theme on the protection of sacred grove and degraded forest there was action activities on plantation, cleaning and plastic picking.

About 100 numbers of sapling of Malagiri, Champ and Cherry trees which are indigenous plants of the grove were planted by putting up signs and names of trees and lots of plastic packets were thrown away by the visitors were also collected.

The programme was also attended by the RO (T) Phodong, FEWMD, Chewang Tashi Bhutia as the chief guest accompanied by the BO(T), Karma Sonam Bhutia, Kabi Forest Department, Staffs, Panchayats, Zilla Panchayat member, Gatuk Bhutia, JEMC Kabi President, teachers, students of Greenvale Academy, Kanchendzonga Academy and members of the organization.

The awareness campaign was also held later on a day at two schools on the sub theme “Save the Green” where the debate and quiz competitions for students were held with General Secretary of the organization and principals of GVA and KJA talked on need to save green.

Zilla Panchayat member, Kabi Tingda GPU, Gatuk Bhutia graced the day as the chief guest accompanied by the General Secretary NGO, Tashi D Bhutia.
