The Chief Minister Pawan Chamling on hearing the fateful incident at Rolep visited the affected site straight after coming back from New Delhi. Interacting with the victims of the 7 June landslide he enquired about the incident and also gave them full assurance that Government will look after them. He was very upset about the incident and also paid his condolences to the deceased. The family members of the victims were also granted ex- gratia of Rs. 1.50 lac each for deceased and Rs. 10,000 for the injured by the Chief Minister. He also announced Rs 35,000 for partially damaged houses and Rs. 5 lac for those which has been swept away by the slide or one storied RCC buildings.
Speaking to the media the Chief Minister said that the incident was a natural calamity because of which these 7 people lost their lives and many sustained injuries. He also directed all the HoDs for taking precautionary measures to avoid such calamities in future. The Chief Minister has also appealed to the people to be aware and take preventive measures as such natural calamities are frequent because the State is in an active seismic zone. He also appealed to the Ministers and MLAs to prepare for such uncertainties.
The two orphaned kids Master Karun Rai, 8 years and Ms Amrita Rai, 12 years were also assured by the Chief Minister that the total cost of their education will be borne by the Chief Minister. These kids have lost their parents and two siblings, one brother and one sister in the fateful incident. The Chief Minister reassuring the husband of a victim, said that this is not a time to panic or take negative steps, rather he should be strong and try and provide good upbringing to his son.
The Chief Minister also distributed blankets, sleeping bags and other necessary items on the day. He was accompanied by the Political Secretary KN Rai, Minister for Roads and Bridges RB Subba, Minister for Tourism Bhim Dhungel, Minister for Animal Husbandry Dawcho Lepcha, Minister for Commerce and Industries Neeru Sewa, MLA BB Rai, MLA Puran Gurung, MLA Menlom Lepcha, Zilla Adhakshya East, Secretary PHED, Secretary Roads and Bridges, Secretary RMDD, DC East and local people.
Similarly AKRS East District Committee headed by the District President Mrs Bineeta Rai accompanied by the executive members also visited the landslide victims of Rolep on 8th June, 2012. They also inspected the area. They expressed their heartfelt condolences to the landslide victims and their families and assured them to provide help in whatever way possible.
