Gangtok, 8 June 2012:

The president of the All Sikkim Hawkers Association, Sangey Bhutia said their hope rests upon the Gangtok Municipal Corporation for justice to the 125 hawkers as now the jurisdiction of the Lall Bazar is shifted from the Urban Development and Housing Department (UD&HD) to the GMC.

Protesting the new proposal brought by the UD&HD that the license will be renewed only after 10 years Bhutia said that they will never accept the proposal as the department after 10 years may displace the 125 hawkers from Lall Bazar.

Vice president Lakpa Sherpa said that UD&HD earlier had promised to grant the site for 125 hawkers within February 2006 but till date they have not lived up to the promise. On the other hand the department had provided site for two new hawkers between the years 2007-08 he added. The agreement of the department is not all acceptable to all the 125 hawkers he added.

Similarly member Sita Chettri said that 262 members have already got the site allotment but the 125 hawkers who have been waiting so long are still deprived of it. She has appealed the concerned department to kindly grant them the sites without any agreement as it is their right.
