‘State Government is relentlessly working for the betterment of healthy society’- Dahal
The 66th Independence Day was celebrated with great pomp and show at Kyongsa Ground, Gyalshing. The Chief Guest on the occasion Deputy Speaker, Sikkim Legislative Assembly MB Dahal unfurled the National Flag and took the salute presented by the contingents of Sikkim Police, NCC, Scouts & Guides, School children and band parties of Kyongsa Girls SSS, Pelling Senior Secondary School and St. Mary’s Convent.
Thereafter, the District Collector (West), Santa Pradhan read out the Independence Day message of the Governor while Hondala Gyalshen, SDM read out the Chief Minister’s message. On the occasion, MLA Yangthang constituency PL Subba was also present as the guest of honour.
The highlight of the day included variety of cultural programme, drills and patriotic songs presented by students and NGOs.
Addressing the gathering Dahal spoke on the importance of Independence Day and said that our brave forefathers have fought and made sacrifices to free our country and set up a new constitution to govern our own independent nation for common development. ‘We all are within the framework of that constitution which we need to have knowledge of all the articles of our constitution made to protect our rights and duties’, he added. He also appealed the gathering to be a responsible citizen and to be always ready to face the new challenges coming ahead to boost up the society. He informed that the State Government is relentlessly working for the betterment of healthy society in all sectors and urged to join hands together in the mission.
The Independence Day also witnessed the final of men and women open football tournament. In the men’s final, Friends Circle F.C Gyalshing defeated Sinolchu, Tikjuk by a lone goal. The winning team received a cash prize of Rs.30,000/-while the runner-up received Rs.20,000/-. Similarly, in the women’s final, Lingchom SSS defeated Pelling SSS by 3 goal to nil. The winning team received a cash prize of Rs 15000/- while the runner up received Rs 10,000/-. The cash prizes and trophies of both the final matches were sponsored by Sikkim Hydro Power Venture Pvt. Ltd.
Langang Jr. High School for the best girls contingent and Lingchom Sr Sec. School for boys contingent in the parade was judged. Anjali Rai from Gyalshing Sr. Sec. School was adjudged as the best commander.
The merit scholarship to students was also conferred to Kincho Tshering Bhutia of Langang JHS, Manju Rai of Sakyoung SSS, Sanjay Chettri, Lingchom SS and Gandhi Karki, Middle Gyalshing for outstanding performance with cash prize Rs. 3000/- and commendation certificate sponsored by DC West Santa Pradhan, TN Pradhan of Legship, and Dinesh Mittal of Gyalshing.
The meritorious service award was also conferred by the District Administration to Sonam Peden Bhutia, UDC, IPR Department Gyalshing, Govind Prashad Sharma, Peon, Pay &Accounts Office, DAC and JB Jogi, Asstant line man, Power Department Rinchenpong with cash prize of Rs. 5000/- and certificate.
The chief guest also gave away the trophies to winners of the Officer’s sports meet which was held on 14th August organized by the RMDD Department West.
