3rd Open Chess Tournament 2011 concludes

Five day long “3rd Open Chess Tournament 2011” concluded today here at Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), Bhawan Hall, Indira bye pass which was organized by SDF, Bhawan Trust.

The current champion of North Eastern Chess Tournament in girl’s category, Miss. Maha Sweta was announced the winner of 3rd Open Chess Tournament 2011 and was awarded with cash prize worth Rs. 20,000/- along with the Trophy and a certificate.

Whereas, Master Rupesh Jaiswal was placed as the1st runner up with cash prize of Rs. 15,000/- along with trophy, certificate and Mr. Surendra Subba as 2nd runner up awarded with cash prize Rs. 10,000/- trophy, certificate.

Followed by 4th placed Miss. Susmita Lama with cash prize Rs. 9,000/- trophy, certificate, 5th Mr. Manish Gupta Rs. 8,000/-, 6th Mr. BP Pradhan with 7,000/-, 7th Mr. Ratna Sarkar with Rs. 6,000/-, 8th Mr. Manoj Joshi with Rs. 5,000/-, 9th Master Rakesh Gurung with Rs. 4,000/-, Top 10th position Master MK Giri with Rs. 3,000/- respectively.

Top 20 position were occupied by Mr. WT Bhutia, Mr. Tenzing Namgyal Bhutia, Mr. Rabilal Biswakarma, Mr. PT Lepcha, Mr. Lila Pd Acharya, Mr. Bhola Gurung, Mr. Jigdal Zangpo Denzongpa, Mr. Mohan Prasad Singh, Mr. Chamba D Bhutia, Mr. NK Moktan, and the players were awarded with cash prize Rs. 1,000/-.

Chief Guest, Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Mr. NK Pradhan appreciated the step taken by SDF trust which is commendable and is positive in hunting the budding chess players of state. It is an honor for the state to hold such an event and he also said that he is sure that this game will succeed for long term. In his speech, Minister appealed all the participants to play with self esteem. He also mentioned that it has been about 3 years since he has been participating in the same function here at SDF, Bhawan Hall and has emotionally touched him. This game is vast where participating is greater than winning Minister added.

Minister added that winning and loosing is the part of the game, if one wins the game, the other should not get disheartened because participating in any game is greater than being victorious. On the same hand, Minister assured of walking with the Chess Association in future and also assured of introducing this game in every schools of the state.

The function was also marked with cultural programme which was chaired by Minister for Rural Management and Development Department cum IPR Department, Mr. CB Karki, Minister for Tourism Department and Forest, Mr. Bhim Dhungel, Gangtok MLA, Mr. Dorjee Namgyal, Deputy Speaker Mr, MB Dahal, General Secretary, Chelli Morcha, Mrs. Manita Manger, East Convenor, Mrs. Karma Ongmu Bhutia, President of Sikkim Chess Association, Mr. HR Sharma, General Secretary (SCA), Mr. Mahendra Dhakal along with Member of SDF Bhawan Trust, Miss. Kabita Subba.

A total of 108 participants from Sikkim, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong including Nepal, Assam and Bihar had participated in this event. This is the 3rd time where the trust has conducted the tournament and the trust was established in the year 2004 to work on various activities like, Cultural, Sports and educational. A sum of Rs. 1.27 Lakhs was distributed today amongst the participants as cash prize.
