Gorkha Gourav Award conferred on two

Bharatya Gorkha Parisangha (BGP), Sikkim unit conferred the Gorkha Gourav Award to Dr. Mahendra P Lama,Vice Chancellor of Sikkim University and Ugen Chopel a film director, today at Smile Land Ranipool, during a programme. The programme was held under the chairmanship of General Secretary, Sikkim unit of BGP Kamal Gurung. CK Shresttha was present as the chief guest where Dr. CP Giri, former DGP of Assam was the guest of honour. In his speech, Dr Mahendra P Lama stressed on the need to improve the education scenario, to improve the Gorkha Community. Only education can take the community to the national level and recognize its importance. He further said that this community is weak because it did not record its history itself, but others wrote its history.

However he also said that it is not possible for a single person to write the history of a community, so the society has to take part in this process. He also added that the Gorkha community has its own brand name for being brave and this should be maintained. Another challenge in front of the Gorkhas as per the VC is intellectual crisis. However the road to recognition has already started, as the Nepali language has been recognized by the Indian Government and the statue of Shahid Durga Malla has been erected in front of the Indian Parliament. He also added that he has also been able to gain success in the direction as he has been able to get the post of Vice Chancellor in Sikkim University. Similarly Mr. Shrestha said that intellectuals should be respected and expressed his happiness that the Gorkha Parisangh has started organising such a programme. Adding that there are many intellects in the society and they need to be recognised and felicitated for their contribution towards the society.

Ugen Chopel, the other recipient of this award said that after receiving the award he felt that people have started recognising his work and he feels more responsible towards his work and to the society after getting this recognition. Narayan Bhattrai, working president of Bharatya Gorkha Parisangh, Sikkim Unit said the association wants to give message to all Gorkha community and encourage to them to organise such programmes in future. During the programme former MP Nakul Das Rai, advisor of Press Club of Sikkim CD Rai, Dr.I L Sharma and Shanta Pradhan, DC West were also present.
