Governors Gold Cup Update

Gangtok: The 32nd All India Governor’s Gold Cup football tournament 2010 was kick-started on 21st at Pallor Stadium, Gangtok without much notice and participation from the public. The opening match was attended by Minister for Road and Bridges Shri R B Subba as the chief guest where Minister for Agriculture, Shri D N Thakarpa and Minister for Human Resource and Development Department Shri N K Pradhan were present as guest of honour.

The first day first match was played between Bhutan XI and Camelia United Sikkim Sporting Club. Sonam Palzor Bhutia from Camelia Club scored the winning goal for his team after 14 minutes of the game after which no goal was scored by either of the team. Bhutan XI also had many chances to score a goal during the match but those chanced could not be utilized by the players. Sangay Khandu Jersy No. 03 from Bhutan team got Yellow card after 20 minutes of the match for a rough game similarly, Sonam Palzor Bhutia from Camelia Club also got yellow card after halftime.

However this year the game was not enjoyed both by the players as well as the sparse audience who were present because of less public. While interacting with a few people who were present in the stadium it was felt that people had not turned up for the game because only local teams had been given preference in the first match.

It may be mentioned here that a total number of 14 teams are taking part in this prestigious tournament. The final game is to be played on 2nd November 2010. This is the only football tournament in the country which is being conducted un-interruptedly for the last 31 years.
