The Central governments and the Government of West Bengal were trying to suppress the Gorkhaland movement since 1986 but the resolution passed in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly (SLA) on 29th of March during the budget session proves that Gorkhaland demand is constitutional and legitimate rights of the Darjeeling people.
Speaking with the media General Secretary, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Sikkim Unit Mr. Padam Sharma informed that BJP welcomes the decision of Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) Government. As some anti Gorkha people were claiming the demand of Gorkhaland to be unconstitutional but the resolution passed by SLA proves the Gorkhaland demand to be constitutional right of the Gorkha people and also proves that Gorkha people are united.
Mr. Sharma further mentioned that the resolution passed by the assembly will help the movement and will also get support from different angel. “This is time for the Gorkhas to be united” Mr. Sharma stated. Furthermore Mr. Sharma appealed the ruling government to even concentrate in Center considering the Gorkhaland issue as the demand for Gorkhaland is around hundred years old and even requested to pass the Gorkhaland Bill in the Parliament.
Informing further Mr. Sharma said that the Central Government and the Government of West Bengal should no more try to suppress the demand of the Gorkhaland as this is constitutional and fundamental rights of the Gorkhas. Sikkimese must help, support the movement of Gorkhas for the formation of Gorkhaland and come forward Mr. Sharma appealed. Adding further Mr. Sharma stated that BJP will always support the Gorkhaland demand and the party has already mentioned the demand in its party manifesto during the 2009 election and added that BJP Central and State Committee are serious about the Gorkhaland issue.
