The World Environment Day was also observed at Mamring in South Sikkim which was organized by Lanco Foundation under Lanco Teesta Hydel Power Project Limited. The function had Damber Subba (Panchayat President) as the chief guest. The function started with the plantation drive conducted in the project area to mark the day.
Delivering the welcome speech, SK Sarkar, General Manager Lanco informed about the soil conservation and protection of environment. He also said that the Lanco itself will create a good environment and informed to continue the social activities in coming days too. The GM stressed everyone to take care of the saplings and keep the surrounding clean, here he urged everyone to complain if company’s people itself violate it. He also said that company has provided Rs. 30 crores to the state Government for the environment conservation and further informed that Rs. 50 Lakhs will be invested for fish farming at Sirwani.
The Green Environment Project which has been prepared by the students of Namthang Sr. Sec School, Miss, Reema Pradhan and Miss, Smriti Subba was demonstrated during the function to the general public and distinguished guests which was very effective and interesting.
The day also had the prize distribution for the quiz and painting competition on Environment which was held among the different schools like Namthang Sr. Sec. School, Kabrey SS, Mining SS, Majhitar SS, Sirwani and Himal Education Society Karek. The winners of the competition were awarded with the prizes. The competition was held earlier by Lanco at these schools.
A colorful cultural programme was also presented by the students of the different schools.
Delivering on the Environmental session, the chief guest said that how the greenery should be maintained and also informed that the in 21st century everyone is aware about the environment issues. He also added that the plantation drive should not mean only on WED and Green Mission but should be done always. He also expressed his gratitude to Lanco for developing the village with infrastructures. A letter of appreciation was also presented to the GM Lanco by Himal Education Society, Karek Village for the contribution on social service. Also present the day were Karma Choda Bhutia (Coordinator Lanco), Samdup Bhutia (Panchayat Vice President), Lanco officials, Project site farmers club, Eco club committee, students and teachers of different schools and the general public.
