Renowned literary figure of Sikkim Santosh Alley will be conferred with Dr. Shova Kanti Thegim (Lepcha) Memorial Award on 4th of July 2011. Dr. Shova Kanti Thegim Memorial Selection Committee has selected Mr. Alley for the said award for the year 2011. The selection committee meeting was held on 13th June at Gangtok during which the committee approved Mr. Alley for the 14th Dr. Shova Kanti Thegim (Lepcha) Memorial Award for his book “Karayang –Kurung ko Akash” recommended by two tier selection committee constituted by the trust.

Santosh Alley was born on 11th November, 1967 at Suldung busty West Sikkim and completed his primary education (up to Class IV) from Kamling-Suldung primary School in West Sikkim and class VIII from Mangalabarey Junior high School in (1979-82). He completed his class XII from Soreng Senior Secondary School, West Sikkim in 1987. He went on to pursue his higher education and obtained his B. Sc in Biology from Sikkim Government College, Tadong in the year 1989 and after some years, also obtained B.A degree in Nepali and Sociology and completed his M.A in Sociology from Kamraj University, Madurai in 2006.

Mr. Alley developed interest towards literature when he was in class IX by reading lot of magazines, journals and many books related to literature but started writing poems, essays, short stories while he was in the X standard. Mr. Alley informed that he was inspired to write poems from Barandit Pega and his friend Benjamin Pega of Soreng.

While a student of class XII, he along with his friends Prem Chandra Das Rai and Biren Kerung, edited and published a literary magazine in Nepali named “Goreyto” in 1986 till its 4th edition. Thereafter there was no looking back towards his desire and interest in Nepali language and literature and several of his poems, essays, and short stories were published in various Nepali news papers, magazines and journals such as Vichar, Shrastha,Parimal, Nirman, Himalchuli, Madhupark.

In 1986 his first book of Nepali poems named “Talaobhitra Anuhaar” (poems) was published in 1994. Besides all of these he has already authored two other books named Mangar Jaatiko Itihaas, ani Sanskriti Sikkimko Sandarvama in 2003 and Karyang –Kurung ko Aakash poems in 2007. Some of his poems have been translated in Assamese, English and Hindi language too stated Mr. Alley.

Mr. Alley is an active social workers and is associated with various literary and social organizations. He was the founder member of Mangalabarey welfare committee, West Sikkim, General Secretary of Sarva-Dharma Mandir Samiti, Springdale Academi, President of Paschim Zilla, Akhil Sikkim Mangar Sangh in 2000-2007 and state president of Akhil Sikkim Mangar Sangh 2007-2010. He is also the founder member of Sahitya Srijana Samiti, Gangtok.

The author began his career as a teacher (in temporary capacity) in Saple- Sardarey primary school, East Sikkim in 1990, then under education department, now human resource and development department and thereafter was appointed as a graduate teacher in Mangalabarey High school in1991 in regular capacity. After serving eight years in teaching profession, he was transferred to Gangtok on promotion as an assistant education officer in the same department in 1998. Currently Mr. Alley is posted as assistant director, Human Resource and Development Department at Gyalshing since 2003.

Mr. Alley has already been conferred with Shrastha Puruskar by Paschim Sikkim Sahitya Prakashan in 2007, Himal Prakashan Samiti, Dentam in 2007 and Springdale Academi, Mangalabarey in2010 for his contribution to Nepali literature.
