Gandhi Jayanti Celebration Committee of Sangmoo village near Ravangla will
felicitate former Indian Football Captain Bhaichung Bhutia. Bhutia, who is also a
local hero, hails from Tinkitam, Ravangla, a village near Sangmoo.
‘He has started his early football days from this region and has contributed a lot
to the state and the country as a player. To recognize his great contribution to
the game, we have decided to felicitate him, informed Chairman of the celebration
committee Wang Tshering Shandarpa. “Bhaichung has made us proud at national and international level and inspired hundreds of locals and outsiders to follow the game of football”, added Mr. Shandarpa during a press meet in the capital on September 10th.
The celebration is scheduled to be started from September 14 with an open boy’s
football tournament at the play ground of Sangmoo, Junior High School. Former
Minister and a local politician Mr. DD Bhutia will inaugurate the celebration. The
Finals of the tournament will be played on October 2, during the birth anniversary
celebration of Mahatma Gandhi. The tournament, with a cash prize of Rs. 30,000 to the winner and Rs. 20,000 for the runners up with attractive trophies is dedicated
to two locals Late Amber Singh Limboo and his wife Late Maita Rani Limboo.
As the tournament will complete its successful third year this time, the trophy
will be permanently handed over to the winners, informed Mr. Shangdarpa. Rural
sports events, lottery draw, cultural programmes and musical nights will be added
as other attractions during the celebration.
The General Secretary of the celebration committee Rinchen Bhutia informed
that 35 teams are participating in the tournament this season. Man of the match
award from quarter finals and Man of the Tournament to the best player will also
be awarded to the players. The committee will also felicitate the founder teachers
of the school, stated Mr. Bhutia.
