“The earthquake that shook Sikkim and neighbouring areas at 6.11 pm on Sunday, 18th September, 2011 has deeply pained and distressed me”, said His Excellency the Governor of Sikkim Shri Balmiki Prasad Singh in his message to the people of Sikkim.
“I express my heartfelt condolences to the family members of the earthquake victims who have lost their lives. May god give them strength to bear this irreparable loss. I pray for the speedy recovery of those who were injured on that fateful night and who are receiving medical attention.”
“I am aware of the need for relief and rescue operations, restoration of houses damaged or destroyed and mitigation of numerous other hardships. I am holding meetings with the Chief Minister and other officials on a daily basis.”
“The State Government, the Indian Army and the Government of India are all working in tandem in relief and rescue operations and for restoration of power, water supply and communications. The Army has moved into far-flung areas of Sikkim including north Sikkim. I have been assured that on receipt of information for assistance, the Army team would be able to reach them immediately and definitely within 6-8 hours.”
“It is important that we stay alert but at the same time, we should not entertain any rumours which may create panic among the people.”
“In this hour of adversity, let us work together and with determination to overcome the challenges.”
“I am confident that the resilience and determination of the Sikkimese people will prevail in overcoming the aftermath of this devastation.”
