GANGTOK, January 17, 2012 :

A number of schemes related to agriculture and horticulture has been approved during the 42 days tour of CM Pawan Chamling to various districts.

Accordingly, the department will be carrying out these schemes on priority basis, said Secretary Agriculture, Horticulture and Cash Crop Department Vishal Chauhan.

During a press meet, Chauhan informed that a cost of Rs. 5,11000/- has been estimated for the construction of 15 new Village Level Workers (VLW) Centre out of 23 in East, South and West Districts. Repairing cost of eight VLW and other existing VLW centers have been estimated around 39 lakhs.

Amounts have been sanctioned and the work is under progress. Similarly, for the construction of four new VLW Centers at Hee- Gaythang, Namprick, Lingthem and Shipgyer in North District, amount of Rs.1, 2800 has been forwarded for cabinet approval and is expected to be sanctioned within the ongoing month.

He further mentioned that a work order has been issued to the beneficiaries for the construction of 72 rural compost cum urine pits at Dong, South Sikkim. Work is under progress and the project will be completed by March 2012. Likewise, water harvest tank construction is also under way and the project will be completed by the end of March 2012.

Presently, 747 Water harvest tanks are under construction in South, 26 in east and 141 in West district. A work order for land terracing on 25 hectares of land at Lower Jarrong has also been issued and similarly it will be completed by the end of March. An amount of Rs. 40,000 for land terracing has been allotted.

He further informed that the Cabinet has agreed for Amliso Plantation in 34 hectares of area in Turuk Daragaon and 80 hectares in Jarrong. This shall be implemented during May- June 2012.

Similarly a Detailed Project Report for the land development of 500 acres of land in South District has been prepared and submitted to Government of India for approval. Price fixation for agriculture produce is already been done by the state government.

The Agro-Service Centers, one each at Hee-Gaythang and Lum Ghor Santok has been sanctioned and intimation is issued to the Panchayats and they have been instructed to prepare sheds to install the machines. Department is also providing training to farmers at Hee- Gaythang, Lower Dzongu until February 2012, added Chauhan.

He further mentioned that the department is also going to construct around 435 green houses across the state and cabinet has sanctioned the work orders.100 green

houses are under construction in North, 162 in East,110 in South and 63 green houses in West district. Some other areas of North Sikkim are still under verification process. They will also be growing cardamom in approximately 400 acres of land. Beneficiaries have been identified and the plantation work will start from June 2012. State level cold storage at Rangpo is functioning and another one at Melli is under construction process, Chauhan concluded.
