Deepak Tamang, Panchayat President, Martam Nazitam- Gram Panchayat, Martam Block, East Sikkim District, has been honoured with the National Mahatma Gandhi NREGA Award for his outstanding contribution. Tamang was presented the award by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, UPA Chairperson Smt. Sonia Gandhi and Union Minister Shri Jairam Ramesh. The award was presented to him in a glittering function held at the Plenary Hall of Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on 2nd Feb, 2012.
MGNREGA is a national forum for all key stakeholders to come together for mutual inspiration, recognition and reaffirmation of commitment. During this function the Ministry of Rural Development recognizes exemplary work done under this flagship MGNREGA programme. The national award in the implementation of this National Flagship Programme holds special significance for the State of Sikkim, since it found representation amongst the top 9 Gram Panchayats selected from all over the country and consecutively for the second year.
The program was attended by a large contingent from Sikkim comprising of Shri C. B. Karki – Hon’ble Minister, Shri A. K. Ganeriwala – Secretary along with other officials, Gram Panchayats and job-card holders. The Hon’ble Minister also spoke on the occasion and in his address in the conference, highlighted that the State Government attaches priority to the Rural Development Sector under the visionary leadership of Shri. Pawan Chamling, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim. One representative from Sikkim also shared her experience on social audit. The hon’ble Chief Minister who is on an official tour to Delhi also congratulated the MGNREGA team for bringing laurels to the State of Sikkim.
