Gangtok, 3 May, 2012:
After a short slumber from the charges and complaints by the joint organization, the Sikkim University (SU) yet again stands in the trail of Students’ Union of Sikkim. The union through a press release today blamed SU of not introducing sufficient educational courses despite being a central university. Hence, the group of students under the union has put forward their demands to the university which they claim to be purely dedicated towards the betterment of the students’ future. The union also seeks for support from every individual in their movement to justify their careers within their home State.
The demands include the provision of regular courses such as history, commerce, education, english, political science etc. at the post of graduation level from the immediate coming session. M. Sc in zoology, botany and mathematics also to be included. Further, the release states that according to the SU admission policy, 25% reservation is set aside for the students coming from abroad, willing to pursue higher education in M Phil/ PhD programmes. Hence under such situation, the union too wants 50% reservation for the local students in post graduation and higher level studies.
The union also insists SU to form a College Development Committee at the soonest. The fee structure should be brought down at par with other central universities in the country, it adds. Similarly, the union further demands that SU should provide valid and definite results in their website or else provide authenticated results within one week from the declaration of the results in the website. Lastly, the union asserts that SU also needs to include colleges’ faculty members in the executive and academic council of the university.
