A meeting of the Chairpersons of various Commissions and Boards of the state was held at Samman Bhawan, Gangtok on Saturday under the Chairmanship of the Chief Minister Pawan Chamling.
The objective of the meeting was to interact with the Chairpersons about the function and programme of their respective commission and board taken in the larger interest of the people of the state.
During the meeting the Chairpersons placed the report of the programmes, schemes and functions of respective organization along with their suggestions for proper implementation of various policy and programmes of the state government and the problems faced in their day today functioning.
The Chief Minister while interacting with the Chairpersons said that the meeting has been called to honour them for the service rendered by them for the society and know about the various functions of the commissions set up by the government for the welfare of the people and added that a single platform like this will help in preparing a holistic roadmap for the welfare of the state. This in turn will help in preparing effective working pattern and empowering the various organizations.
As these Board and Commission are the part and parcel of the government therefore the authorities should work with equal responsibility and should run parallel to the government’s programme and the functions. He suggested them to be creative in their working pattern which will be an additional benefit for the state. The chairperson should dedicate their post and designation for the welfare of the people of Sikkim which will give them satisfaction in life, the Chief Minister added. He also suggested the chairpersons to hold their board meeting at least once in two month and also hold public awareness programme regarding the schemes and programme of the respective boards and commissions.
Talking about the various suggestions and grievances placed by Chairpersons during their interaction the Chief Minister assured that the government will look into the grievances and fulfill the demands of the commissions in the larger interest of the people of the state. He also assured to increase the fund being allocated to the commissions by the government besides increasing the discretionary fund to the chairpersons.
The Chief Minister also declared to establish Spastic Society Centre in Gangtok and establishment of OBC School at Kamrang in South District from the next session. Pawan Chamling urged all the head of the Commissions and Boards to work hard keeping in mind that they are the development functionaries and also should guide the state towards the destination of development and convert it into self sufficient state.
In his address B.B Gurung, former Chief Minister and Chairman Welfare Board thanked the government for holding such type of interactive meeting with the Chairperson which will help to reflect fruitful results in the process of development. He said that the appointment of the Chairperson is made by the government to watch the proper implementation of the programme of the government and inform to the people about the various programmes and policy of the government. He said the chairpersons are the energy of the government and should work as the bridge between the voice of the people and the government. He further said that the duty of the chairperson is to support the government with responsibilities, providing justification to the society.
Earlier, the Principal Secretary Social Justice, Empowerment and Welfare Department during the welcome speech presented a brief report of the programme and the schemes of department and its various Boards and Commissions. He also informed that such a meeting with the Chief Minister and the Chairperson is a history in itself as it was the first time it has ever happened.
The meeting concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by the Additional Secretary, Welfare Division.
