The mortal remains of the 4th incarnation in the line of Gomchens of Lachen Venerable Lachen Gomchen Rinpoche were laid to rest at Enchey Monastery yesterday.
The body of Rinpoche, who left for his heavenly abode on 18th September, 2012 after prolonged sickness, could not be taken to Lachen due to the flashflood, landslide and inclement weather.
More than 2000 followers of the late Rinpoche marched on foot from his residence in Development Area to Enchey Monastery. The monks from Tsuklakhang Monastery and Takchi also joined in the ceremonies and to pay their last respects to the Rinpoche along with the others.
His pyre was lit by a monk with his progeny. The unprecedented emotional crowd bid tearful farewell to the late Rinpoche. The Chief Minister Pawan Chamling offered Khada to the bier of the late Rinpoche at his residence early in the morning. The Speaker Sikkim Legislative Assembly KT Gyaltsen, MLA Gangtok Dorji Namgyal, Mayor KN Tobgay and Deputy Mayor Shakti Singh were also present for the cremation.
Late Rinpoche breathed his last in Delhi, from where his body was brought to Bagdogra by air and received by Minister for Health DN Thakarpa with others.
Late Rinpoche, born in Yangang South Sikkim, was from the first batch of monks to have successfully completed his studies from SHEDA, Chorten, Deorali. He was also an MLA from Sangha seat in the 2nd Assembly from1979 to 1984. The State Government had declared a public holiday today as a mark of respect to the departed soul. The next incarnation of Lachen Gomchen has not been announced as yet.
