Sikkim: Free Cataract Operation Camp in Namchi

Namchi (Sikkim), November 22, 2012:

The National Programme for Control of Blindness (NPBC) wing of Health Care. Human Services & Family Welfare Department, South District had screened and some 60 patients of Cataract from the South District for free cataract operation through screening camps organised in various PHCs and PHSCs of South District.

The 3 day Free Cataract Operation Camp with IOL Implantation at District Hospital Namchi got underway.

The inauguration function of the same was organised in the conference hall of District Hospital Namchi, where the area MLA, Binod Rai graced the occasion as the chief guest.

Addressing the inaugural function Binod Rai highlighted on how the Chief Minister Pawan Chamling led government has been working seriously and tirelessly in giving best health care to Sikkimese people.
He also informed that innovative health programmes like CATCH which has been conceptualized by the Chief Minister Pawan Chamling has been successful in giving the people from the rural and even the far flung areas a good and proper heath care and check up.

Further he congratulated the CMO (South) Bimal Rai and his entire team for doing a commendable job and also organizing such eye care camps in the district.

During the function Dr. B.P Dhakal Head Ophthalmologist of STNM Hospital, Gangtok, was also presented with a letter of appreciation by the Chief Guest on behalf of all people of South District for his meritorious service.

Earlier the inaugural function began with the welcome speech by the CMO (South) Dr. Bimal Rai where he highlighted on the objectives of holding such camps and also informed that these sorts of camps are being held at regular intervals.

This camp will see more than sixty patients from South District who have been screened for cataract, getting free operation and their vision restored. Dr. B.P Dhakal Head Ophthalmologist of STNM Hospital, and his team of Doctors and Dr. Twinkey Bhuita Ophthalmologist Namchi District Hospital will carry out the operations of these patients during this three day camp.

It may be informed that Dr Dhakal has successfully carried out more than 10,000 such operations.

The function was well attended by Chairperson Namchi Municipal Council B.T Tamang. His Deputy N.H Ansari, Gagan Rai ,Chairperson Sikkim Temi Tea Baord, SDM (Hq)  Karma T Bonpo, members of various NGOs and students from Namchi Government College.
