Gangtok, November 20, 2012:
Sikkim NOW!’s North District Correspondent Wangchuk Bhutia will be conferred the first Rural Journalism Award (Grameen Patrakarita Puraskar) for best rural reporting.
Bhutia’s name has been selected from among six nominations by a selection committee held today here at the Press Club of Sikkim. Bhutia also contributes news for local channel and a vernacular daily ‘Samay Dainik’The award has been instituted by the Press Club of Sikkim to encourage reporters on rural news writing in Sikkim. Governor Balmiki Prasad Singh had contributed Rs 1.5 lakhs to PCS for the initiative last year.
The Minister for Information and Public Relations Department CB Karki will hand away the award to Bhutia comprising of Rs 10,000 cash, citation and a shawl during the celebration of National Press Day on November 23 in Gangtok. Also present will be the Secretary of IPR KS Topgay.
The celebration will also feature presentation of positive grants to five journalists of Sikkim by IPR department. Meantime, the PCS has expressed gratitude to Governor Singh for his kind support in encouraging journalists on rural reporting.
