The 23-year-old para-medical student, who was allegedly gangraped last Sunday in a moving bus, is in a critical condition. The victim is being observed in ICU in Safdarjung hospital.
Police arrested the main accused Ram Singh (bus driver), his brother Mukesh (who was driving the bus when the rape took place), Vinay Sharma (gym instructor) and Pawan Gupta (fruit seller). Both the brothers Ram Singh and Mukesh have previous criminal records. All the accused lived in RK Puram in New Delhi and the bus was traced in RK Puram Sector 3, said Chhaya Sharma, DCP of South Delhi Police during the press conference here.
One of the absconding accused has been identified as Akshay Thakur, who hails from Bihar. Efforts are on to nab the culprits, the police chief said.
According to the doctors, the victim suffered severe injuries on her head and abdomen. The victims underwent four major surgeries, two in her intestines and the other 2 in her genital parts. She is said to be in a critical condition and is being observed in ICU. The next 48 hours will be crucial for the victim, doctors said.
The incident occurred on last Sunday (Dec 16), according to the police, the victim was beaten up by the accused with a blunt object on her hands and abdomen.
The victim and her friend, who were supposed to go to Dwarka, boarded a chartered bus at Munirka in South Delhi on that fateful night.
According to the statement, seven men were inside the bus, and these men were involved in the crime. When the victim’s friend tried to save the girl, he was also severely beaten and left wounded. Both of them were later thrown out of the bus near Mahipalpur, which is about few kilometers from IGI Airport, New Delhi.
According to National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), 635 cases of rape were registered in Delhi alone, 653 cases of molestation reported in 2011 and 601 cases in 2010.
