New Delhi, November 30, 2012
The former prime minister Inder Kumar Gujral, who was admitted to the Medicity Medanta hospital in Gurgaon on November 19, passed away on Friday after prolonged illness. He was 92.
“IK Gujral passed away at 3:31 pm at Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon,” Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde told the Parliament.
Earlier in the day, Naresh Gujral, the son of the former PM and a Rajya Sabha member from the Shiromani Akali Dal, had said that doctors have given up hope. A team of nine senior consultants headed by Dr Naresh Trehan was keeping a close watch on the patient.
Born on December 4, 1919, Gujral served as the 12th prime minister from April 1997 to March 1998. He was the second PM to govern exclusively from the Rajya Sabha, first being his immediate predecessor HD Deve Gowda.
