Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling yesterday announced that the class XI and XII students of St Xavier’s School, Pakyong, East Sikkim will also receive free lap top computers from the government, and also sanctioned Rs 1.10 Crore for the construction of pavilion of the school ground, which will be provided during the next financial budge 2014, while speaking on the occasion of Diamond Jubilee Closing Ceremony of the school.
Mr. Chamling who graced the occasion as the chief guest in his address was all praise for the institution and stated that St Xavier School Pakyong is one of the most renowned and reputed educational institutions of the state and expressed his gratitude towards the all concerned people who started and established the school.
The main purpose of education is to make a good human resource, and it should not be confined to be just a medium to get job or to certify oneself as educated, so he urged the students to learn and be knowledgeable to make themselves a better human being.
“The amount of opportunities and the openings which the government has created for the students should be appreciated by the people used and utilized to the optimum, by the students,” the Chief Minister said.
He added: “Education should never be an industry or treated as business otherwise the soul of education will vanish. With the sense of ownership will come real development, therefore dividends as well as deficits of democracy should be shared by the people in order to be a developed individual and state in real terms”.
Earlier Principal of the School in his welcome address informed that St Xavier School Pakyong is the first Roman Catholic education institution of Sikkim and some 80 students of Chief Minister’s meritorious scholarship are presently studying and doing very well.
The closing ceremony also saw the guests being entertained by songs dances and skit presented by the students.
During the function the School also presented the Chief Minister with the memento.
Later in the afternoon Chamling also attended a literary function organized by Sikkim Prathibha Pratisthan, Pakyong in the community hall, along with prominent literary figures which included Mahananda Poudyal, Nar Bahadur Dahal and Uday Thulung among host of others.
During the function Chamling released the annual magazine “Pardeshi” and a musical album.
The function also saw the Chief Minister being felicitated by the organizers while the literary figure Mahananda Poudyal was also felicitated during the occasion and presented with citation letter and memento, the Chief Minister did the honours.
Speaking on the occasion Pawan Chamling expressed his joy and happiness and termed the occasion as auspicious gathering of intellectuals and literary figures from and outside the state.
He also lauded the efforts and contributions made by Mr. Poudyal while urging the people to be more responsible and accountable in order to usher the state towards the path of prosperity.
