Gangtok, August 20, 2013

Use of thermocol products have been banned in Arithang ward here in Gangtok. This was officially announced on August 18 by ward councilor Ashish Rai.

“Sikkim has already imposed a ban on use of plastic carry bags. No it is time to say no to thermocol products as it is a major reason for land pollution,” said Ashish while addressing an interacting meeting on solid waste management at Arithang junior high school.

The meeting was organized by United Arithang Development Society (UADS).

The ward councilor appreciated the activities of UADS in waste management. “Members of the society are judged by how clean they keep their locality and surroundings. In Arithang, UADS has been a crusader in educating and brining awareness on waste management,” he said.

State Pollution Control Board senior scientist Dr. Gopal Pradhan gave a presentation on solid waste management.

GMC assistant commissioner Sangay Bhutia informed that GMC has installed CCTV cameras in jhoras to capture images of those dumping wastes in the jhoras. Heavy fines would be imposed on those who dump garbage in jhoras, the official said.

Ganesh Shivakoti and Wangyal T Bhutia of UADS also addressed the meeting.
