NE students to protest against Racial Attacks in Delhi

New Delhi, February 13, 2014

The recent racial attacks on the northeasterners in the national capital sparked off a widespread uproar.  A big protest march is now scheduled to hold in the Parliament Street, New Delhi on February 14, 2014 to protest against racism, racial discrimination, hates crimes and related violence meted out by the people of northeast regions in the national capital city.

“It is a high time to stand up and unite to fight collectively against racism, racial discrimination and related violence,” they said.

The campaign against racism and the protest march on V-day is initiated by the concerned students from the Northeast, JNU along with all northeast students associations based in Delhi.

“All the concerned individuals/bodies/people who stand against racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerances, hate crimes and racial violence are requested to participate in the said march,” they said.

Some of the recent incidents that happened within this few weeks are as follows:
The death of Nido Taniam. Young Nido, a 19 years old student studying in Chandigarh, who came for 10 days holiday in Delhi was beaten mercilessly by shopkeepers of Lajpat Nagar. Nino succumbed to his injury the next day. Post mortem report confirmed he died of injuries from the brutal attack.

Not even a week after that when the people of NE are trying to cope up with this gruesome murder, a young girl of around 14 years from Manipur was brutally raped by her own landlord’s son on the night of 7th Feb 2014 in Munirka. The accused has been arrested by the Delhi Police.

Again on 9th Feb 2014, two boys from Manipur were physically attacked by a group of motorbike riders in Ambedkar Nagar area of South Delhi around 8.30pm when they resented some racial remarks. They were beaten up following an argument with two passers-by who allegedly called them “Chinki”.  One of them was seriously injured and has been hospitalized in AIIMS.

Next, a 24-year-old youth from Manipur was stabbed and robbed in the early hours of 11th Feb, 2014 around 3am by 5 local goons in Saket, south Delhi. The youth, whose cell phone and wallet has been snatched by the assailants. The victim injured his abdomen as well as liver. He has been admitted in the ICU of Saket City Hospital since then.
