Chief Minister Pawan Chamling on Sunday discussed with Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on the issue of expeditious permitting the visit of 17th Karmapa Ugyen Trinley Dorje to Sikkim. Official sources said Chidambaram gave a patient hearing to Chamling, who also raised other issues like development, and promised to look into the demands at the Delhi meeting.

The followers of Karmapa Ugyen Trinley Dorje demand that New Delhi must lift the ban on the young ‘lama’ to travel to Rumtek, and allow him to take his throne at the monastery. “It has been 10 years since the 17th Karmapa had come to India from Tibet, but still he has not been allowed to enter Sikkim even though being allowed to visit Bokar monastery in Mirik, which is very close to state.

He should be allowed to come,” a spokesperson for the Karmapa Reception Committee said at a rally in Gangtok on September 26. The 17th Karmapa Dorje escaped to India on January 5 in 2000. Chamling also briefed Chidambaram on various development activities. Other demands included urgent reservation of assembly seats for the Limboo and Tamang communities in the state legislature, speedy implementation of alternate NH 31A to Sikkim.
