Gangtok 20th January:
The wage rates under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) have been increased from Rs 100 to Rs 118 with effect from 1st January 2011 for Sikkim State. The State Government had earlier requested the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India to enhance the wage rate under MGNREGA for Sikkim State considering that the minimum wages had been revised to Rs 130/- per day.
The Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India has enhanced the wage rates on the basis of Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the agricultural labor and from now onwards there will be an annual revision of the wage rates. The enhanced wage rate will benefit more than 40,000 rural households working under MGNREGA across the State.
