Twelve players from Sikkim Amateur Wushu Association (SAWA) would be taking part in the 5th North East Wushu Championship, 2011 to be held in Imphal, Manipur, the championship is organized by Wushu Association of Manipur.
The championship would be held form 15th to 21st of January, the team of Sikkim led by Chief Referee cum Coach Mr OS Singh will leave on 11th of January to participate in the event.
The championship has been organized for sub-junior and junior wushu players, and there are 9sub junior and 3 juniors from Sikkim taking part in this event.
Those participating players for sub-junior title are Ms. Pragya Rai for 36kg category, Rakesh Singh for 32kg, Riwaz Rai, 52kg, Abhishek Rai, 48Kg, Arun chettri, 44Kg, Mukesh Singh, 40Kg, Som Bahadur Tamang, 44kg, Mahindra Sharma, 36 kg and Kawan Subba under 40kg respectively. Under junior title Ravi Sharma would be competing for 48kg category, whereas, Passang Lepcha for 45kg and Ms. Benita Rai for 48kg category.
Interacting with media Mr. Singh said that SAWA had organized a month long coaching for the wushu players of Sikkim and form the coaching the best players have been selected for the championship. Adding further said that amongst all selected candidates four of them have already taken part in the National championship and remaining are fresher’s.
Mr. Singh further added that he has lots of expectation form Ms. Benita Rai, Som Bahadur Tamang, Abhishek Rai, Ravi Sharma and Rakesh Singh considering the potential they hold as viewed during coaching . Adding further said that during the last competition they participated a total of 35 players had taken part where they won eight gold, fifteen silver and eight bronze medals in different category and championships. Similarly Mr. Singh added that senior players even used to take part in the championship organized by Manipur every year but due to school breaks during winters the participants could not attend.
On march first week the SAWA will be taking part in the 11th sub Junior Wushu Championship organized at Bangalore and for the championship the selected sub junior players for 5th North East Championship would be participating, again in the 2nd week of April too the wushu players of Sikkim would be taking part in the championship to be held in Goa.
