The Universal Peace Federation of Sikkim and INVDCC, Chuba are jointly organizing Hills Men Open Volleyball and Constituency Level Women Volleyball Tournaments from 15–24 October, 2011 at Chuba School Playground, South Sikkim. The opening ceremony of the programme was attended by Binod Rai, MLA as the Chief Guest, Suraj Rai Headmaster, Perbing Secondary School as Special Guest, G. M. Gurung, Chairman of UPF-Sikkim and Dendup Sherpa, Director of UPF-Sikkim, Purna Kumari Gurung, Zilla Panchayat Member and other Panchayat members and surrounding schools teachers.
The ceremony started with a two minutes silent prayer for the victims of recent earthquake. The welcome speech was given by Ritu Rai, Teacher of Chuba School. T P Dhungel, HM of Chuba School highlighted and briefed about the programme which is being organized as a part of present pattern of educational system of the state government which is a must and fruitful for the students to explore their hidden talents. G M Gurung, Chairman of UPF-Sikkim also addressed the ceremony saying that women are needed to be empowered for the sake of building world peace so the tournament as a means for it is being organized as the UPF’s Founder Dr. Sun Myung Moon’s vision senior citizens, intellectuals are for development, youths are for service and women are for peace of ‘World’ and sport can bridge and harmonize the people.
Binod Rai, Chief Guest addressing the gathering said that games and sports are very important in human life. He also highlighted the policy and programme of the State Government to tackle the situation created by the earthquake and assured to provide every help to the villagers. Three matches were played on the opening day and all together 18 Men Teams and 16 Women Teams have participated and final match will be played on 24 October, 2011 for which Tilu Gurung, Minister, Housing and Buildings has consented to grace the occasion as Chief Guest so the organizing committee welcomes one and all for the same.
The opening ceremony was participated by women group of Adult Education Mission (Shakchar Bharat Mission) with two patriotic songs and students also performed various cultural programmers. The ceremony was conducted by Mr. Prakash Chettri, teacher as master of ceremony.
