GANGTOK, October 30, 2013

Owing to lack of awareness to respond to crisis such as the October 3 earthquake especially in schools and colleges, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), East in coordination with Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority today organised a two-day long workshop on ‘creation of training of trainers (ToT) for earthquake safety programme in the schools of east district’.

The workshop had participation of 87 teachers from different schools of the district. The participant teachers – identified as the master trainers for this purpose – are now supposed to impart training to other teachers and students in their respective schools and colleges.

During the workshop, the teachers were given introduction on various kinds of disasters experienced in the district, overview of disaster management and do’s and don’ts on various disasters.

The module for school safety plan was also discussed thoroughly. In the first phase of the Earthquake safety tips imparted to east district school teachers programme, the trained teachers are to conduct an awareness programme in their schools and are to prepare and submit the school safety plans of their schools including the resource mapping and vulnerability mapping with the help of other teachers and students by second week of November.

In the second phase, the master trainers will be reciprocating the same module in their feeder schools. The basic idea is to train students especially kids through demonstration to respond any crisis.

At the same time they are trained to contribute in the early warning mechanism. The programme also had an experience sharing session from Aho School headmaster A.K. Bhandari, who has already prepared the school safety plan and conducted mock drills on earthquake and fire.

The programme was graced by east district collector cum chairman DDMA Aunjaneya Kumar Singh, while the resource persons were DPO East Sonam Wongyal Lepcha, DPO, Hq Karma Dorjee Wazalingpa and east training officer Bijayata Kharel.
