A total of 967 graduates and post graduates including four Ph.D of Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) and Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT) under Sikkim Manipal University in various disciplines were awarded degrees and certificates during the 13th Convocation ceremony held at the auditorium hall of SMIMS, 5th Mile Tadong on October 5, 2013.
The ceremony was graced by the Governor of Sikkim, Mr. Shriniwas Patil, also the Chancellor of the University, Mr. P.D. Rai, M.P. Lok Sabha, Mr D.N. Thakarpa, Minister for Health Care, Human Services and Family Welfare, along with Dr Ramdas M. Pai, Pro-Chancellor, Brig. S.N. Mishra, Vice Chancellor, Mr. M.N. Venkatachalliah, former Chief Justice of India as the Chief Guest, Mr Alok Kumar Sinha, former Secretary to the Government of India and a host of other dignitaries.
The ceremony began with the academic procession led by the students of College of Nursing, academic Senate members, the Governing Council, Chief Guest, other dignitaries and the Chancellor of the University. It was followed by the declaration of Convocation open by the Chancellor.
Conveying his good wishes to the students, the Governor mentioned that Sikkim Manipal University is a good example of public-private partnership in the country, devoted to higher professional education and health care facilities. The Governor also complimented the state Government for the support to the University and lauded the initiatives as a far sighted vision.
SMU has crossed several milestones in imparting quality education and health care facilities to the people at the doorstep and perhaps is also one of the best learning institutes in North East region, he added. The Governor appealed the students to continue the process of learning and also think for a meaningful contribution to the nation.
The Chief Guest in his address asked the students to meet the challenges of life maintaining sincerity, determination and handwork. Furthermore, he also asked them to utilize the knowledge acquired in the interest of the people as a whole. He also mentioned the state Government initiatives and added that Sikkim plans to become a premier state of India in terms of agriculture, tourism, education and health care.
Earlier, Pro-Chancellor SMU presented the welcome address. The function also saw the release of the annual report by the Governor and other dignitaries on the dais.
The programme also witnessed the achievements of SMU presented by the Vice Chanellor.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Registrar SMU followed by the declaration of Convocation closed by the Governor.
