“I am working honestly but the process of resettlement of the land donors is being hampered because of the bad road condition of Yangyang” said Mr AK Singh, District Collector, South while speaking over the phone on land acquisition issue for Sikkim University (SU). He further added that that the road condition of the area is such that only light vehicle can pass for it and the rain is also doing much harm to the project.
He informed that the resettlement plan has already been approved by the State Government and the process of land acquisition has also been completed but as the people are yet to be resettled, the land cannot be handed over to the University authorities. Adding Mr. Singh said that there are around one hundred and fifty land donor families that needs to be resettled and the process is taking too long.
The Human Resource and Development department had already acquired 250 acres of land at Yangyang, South Sikkim for SU for which SU has paid Rs. 15 crores to the Government. The department as well as the district administration is serious about the issue and every step to mitigate the pending works is being carried out, stressed the DC.
Sikkim University was established in the year 2007 and is operational but because of the pending land acquisition for the establishment of University it is running from rented houses.
