Gangtok, 13th June: A meeting of South Sikkim Truck Drivers Association was held in their office at Ravangla which was chaired by the unit president Mr Dadul Bhutia. In his address Mr. Bhutia appealed to all drivers to do life insurance for the security of their families and their own future. The insurance should be preferably in the name of their wives. Vehicle owners should provide insurance in the name driver of around five lakhs for the security of the drivers. No vehicle owner can terminate the services of the drivers without strong reason and in the unlikely incident of having terminated the services they will have to pay the salary of thirteen months to the driver.

The association has also decided to have the life of the drivers insured for at least 2 lakhs. Further the president also called on the drivers to do their duty sincerely and with honesty as the lives of the passengers are in the hands of the drivers. Drivers were also warned that they should not consume drugs and alcohols when they are driving and if anyone is found to have consumed such substances while driving strict action will be taken against them.

Vice president Mr. Dhan Bahadur Chettri appealed to all drivers to follow traffic rules and regulation and do their work honestly. Similarly president of Sikkim unit Mr. L.B Subba appealed to drivers to be united and make the drivers’ association strong. Singtam unit general secretary Mr. Shyamlal Chettri appreciated the decision of the association to have insurance in the names of the drivers and their families because private drivers did not have any insurance policy till now but this decision of the association brought a new concept for the security of the lives of the drivers.
