West Sikkim landslides kill 16

Sixteen people perished in three separate landslides at Khorong Busty near Pelling, Lower Pelling and Tikjek Busty under the West Sikkim district headquarters of Gyalshing. All three landslides took place at around 11.30 pm on Thursday night. Fourteen people were buried alive when rolling debris from a hill piled on a house, where 25 people were residing, at Khorong village in Yangthang constituency, Superintendent of Police, West Sikkim, AK Singh said. Among the victims are 11 members of one single family.

At Khorung Busty, in Upper Pellling West Sikkim, the slide damaged the house of Prakash Gurung killing several people. The dead bodies of the following people were recovered today today from the house of Prakash Gurung Kumar Rai, Maya Tamang, Anu Rai 8 yrs, Anup Rai 7 yrs, Buddha Rai 2yrs, Dawa Tamang 70yrs, Suk Maya Chettri 50 yrs. These deceased were all from Darjeeling and were living in rented accommodation.

The dead bodies of Tek Bahadur Adhikari 42 yrs. and his wife Januka Adhikar 30 yrs was recovered but their three months old baby’s body is yet to be recovered from the debris. This couple were originally from Sarnath
Nepal and were living in the same rented building. The family members
of Prakash Gurung (the mother and borther) were fortunately saved but
his sister Premila Rai 16 yrs. is still missing. The other casualties
who have been rescued are referred to Geyzing hospital, Roshna Rai 26
yrs, Indra Maya Gurung 45 yrs. Pradip Rai 10 yrs, SumanTamang and Doma
Tamang.

The incessant rain has caused several other landslides in West Sikkim. The inter-district road was also cut off and power and water supply remained disturbed for more than 20 hours. All the areas affected by landslides are tourist hotpots.

The second landslide buried a house at Tikjek village, killing on the spot a man identified as Kumar Thakur who lived there along with his friend. His friend had a miraculous escape when large chunks of mud and stones brought the house down like a pack of cards. A tourist was also killed when mounds of debris and mud crashed down on to a hotel, Mandala Lodge, at Lower Pelling.

The bodies of eight victims have been retrieved so far as search and rescue operations were carried out throughout the night, DIG Range told this correspondent. Senior officials from the district administration, DC West, Santa Pradhan, SDPO West, SP West and MLA of the area PL Subba visited the affected villages.

The list of the deceased as issued by the DIG (Range) N Sridhar Rao are Pramila Gurung, resident of Upper Tinjek, Phipraj Subba Lingjoom, Sirijung Subba, Upper Tinjek, Kumar Rai of Darjeeling, Maya Tamang, wife of Kumar Rai, Anup Rai, father of Kumar Rai, Anu Rai, Tek Bahadur Adhikari, resident of Nepal, Januka Rai, wife of Tek Bahadur Rai and their one child, Dawa Tamang, Sukmaya Tamang, wife of Dawa Tamang, Maya Tamang, Raj Kumar Thakur, resident of Pelling and Manmaya Subba, resident of Tikjuk lost their lives in the landslide. Four people were injured and admitted to the Gyalshing hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, all essential supply lines have remained disrupted in the landslide-affected areas and torrential rains have hampered resue and restoration operations, informed the DIG Range.
