Sikkim earthquake on September 18 was not the first natural disaster that hit lives of thousands. Nor is it for the first time rehabilitation and relief work will need to be run on a massive scale for a sustained period of time.
On numerous occasions human spirit and determination has over-come great natural disasters. It was done in Gujarat after cyclones and earthquake. It was done in Southern states of India, Indonesia and Myanmar after Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004, in America after Hurricane Katrina of 2005 and in China after Sichuan earthquake of 2008. But the classic example is of Japan. Over last hundreds of years and most recently in Tsunami, Japanese did it over and over again with the same sense of resilience and determination to spring back every next time, stronger than ever before.
It’s people like us who have shown before that country ravaged in war and natural disasters can be built and past can be buried to build a better and more promising future. Now its your turn, your chance to show the same spirit to rebuild Sikkim.
Sikkim was the epicenter of the tragic earthquake that jolted the region on September 18. The death toll in Sikkim alone has mounted to 78. Not only that, this massive earthquake of 6.9 magnitude has resulted in immense disruption to houses, infrastructure, roads and communication network in the state. CM Pawan Kumar Chamling said that the earthquake had caused losses and damage worth 1 trillion rupees ($22 billion). Relief and rehabilitation in the state will continue for many coming months. Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Thursday said that the Centre would give Rs 50 crore immediately as grant for relief and rehabilitation work. Many other state governments, organisations and non-government organisations are coming forward to build Sikkim again. A great amount of determination and conviction is needed to do so. The amount of loss and damage is enormous and every one has to come forward to help the people in distress. Government of Sikkim has issued a circular for individuals and organisations interested in cash contribution for Sikkim earthquake relief. Two bank account numbers have been opened for Chief Minister’s Relief Fund contributions.
