The setting up of ‘State Data Center’ by Sify under the department of Information and Technology (IT), Government of Sikkim has been completed, informed Rajesh Verma , Principal Director (IT Department). Sify was selected for the project in the Himalayan after the state government invited a national bid.

In the beginning the data center will host websites a few website like ‘Sikkim Viklang Sahayata Samiti’, one on GIS application on ‘Land management and planning and ‘Sikkim Archives’ on intranet. These will later be shifted to websites. Mr. Verma further informed that all the installation of hardware and software of state data center has been met with by the data center being operated by Sify itself.

Informing more Mr. Verma said that data of all the state government departments will be hosted under data center approximately by the end of September or first week of October 2011. Furthermore Mr. Verma stated that all the security, preventive and precautions measures considering the websites under state data center has also been taken up seriously by the IT department.

Likewise the officials of Sify the implementing or the operating company of state data center informed that the company is using oracle and windows 2008 as data base servers in the state data center and by using any of the servers the government data base can be hosted. Adding more the officials of Sify mentioned that they have also used iball 6 terabyte storage devices in the center from where the space required for storing the flies of every department in state will be allocated on demand.

The Data center has also facilitated the tap library in the center which usually is used as back up as scheduled by the operator either on
daily basis or weekly. But disaster recovery site, the most important feature necessary in such centers, is currently not available for the state. It is learnt that the government has been already informed for the same and the plan, program on having such recovery site is also under process.

The establishment of the data center in state by the government is to make all the government activates modern, cashless, paperless and the most important is transparent.
