15th Annual general meeting of Sikkim Milk Union Reported growth of over 34% in the Year 2010-11 and is the Fourth Consecutive Successful Year.

The 15th Annual General Body Meeting of the Sikkim Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd was held on 20th October 2011 at the conference hall of the Karfectar Tourism Guest House at Jorethang. The Chairman, Sikkim Milk Union, M.B Rai in his address appreciated the cooperation extended by the village milk cooperative societies and management for the better performance for the fourth consecutive year. The farmers are receiving Bonus in the form of price difference for the fourth consecutive years.

Every Year the Sikkim Milk Union is expanding its business and within a few months it will be adding Ice cream in the market. He also stressed the need for responsible participation from the village societies to further improve on the quality and quantity of milk procured by the societies.

The Managing Director Dr. P. Senthil Kumar presented the audited annual accounts for the year 2010-11 and the business development plan and future plans of the Sikkim Milk Union. He stated that the Sikkim Cooperative Milk producer’s union Ltd experienced yet another successful year for the following reasons. For the fourth consecutive year, the Sikkim Milk Union has earned profit. The benefits of such performance will be provided as bonus price difference to societies for the year 2010-11 in this AGM today.

The turnover of Sikkim milk union has grown from Rs. 1280 lakhs in the year 2009-10 to Rs. 1720 lakhs in the year 2010-11, which is above 34 % growth. A hike of milk price to the farmers to the tune of over 112% (more than double) increase with the revision of only 75% increase in selling price within a period of four years has been given. Employee Gratuity Fund has been subscribed with the LIC to provide confidence among the employees and to avoid liabilities of the Union on this. Asian Productivity Organization has selected Sikkim Milk union to develop into a demonstration Unit by the end of year 2011-12. Successfully got the contract for supply of milk in army establishments both inside outside the state.

The Sikkim Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd. was formed in the year 1980 and registered under the Sikkim State Cooperative Societies Act, 1978. It is an apex body of the primary milk producers’ cooperative societies formed at the village level on Anand Model Milk Cooperatives. Two Milk processing plants one each at Tadong, Gangtok and other at Karfectar, Jorethang having processing capacities of 10,000 and 5,000 litres per day respectively.
