Sikkim: Landslide at Tathangchen poses threat to residents

Gangtok, 15 June 2012:

The continuous rainfall triggered a landslide on Thursday  morning at 4 am near Kamala Gas agency at Tathangchen, Gangtok.  Though no casualties were reported but the landslide has posed threat to some of the residence. Immediately after the occurrence the ward councilor, Mayor KN Topgay, Deputy Mayor Shakti Singh Chowdhury reached the spot.

DPO Sonam Wangel said that the rescue team has been deployed in the place and has been operational there. Tarpaulins and bamboos are being used temporarily to control further slide he added. They have also alert the nearby six houses which seems to be in danger as the natural calamity may ensue at any point of time said Wangel.

The houses of Ugen Tshering Bhutia, Pintso Zangpo Bhutia, Sherap Themchi Bhutia, Tashi Zangpo Bhutia, Ugen Bhutia and of Kaley Lepcha are at risk because of the landslide.

The landslide has inculcated fear among the residents. It may be mentioned here that a landslide that occurred in 1997 had killed five people in the same place.
