Gangtok, July 23, 2012:
The Sikkim State Election Commission had carried out fresh delimitations for the rural areas for both Territorial and Gram Panchayat Units in Sikkim for the upcoming Panchayat Election 2012, wherein the different political parties of the State were kept unknown. The political parties had expressed their discontentment as elsewhere in the other State of the India the Election Commission seeks advice from the political parties during the delimitation process.
The Commissioner of State Election Commission SK Goutam today clarified that the Commission have its own rules and regulations and the delimitation has been carried out as per the Act of the Commission.
The Panchayat election may be held somewhere in October considering the climatic circumstances said Gautam. The date will be fixed by the Commission not the Government but the machinery help will be taken from the Government added the Commissioner.
The erstwhile 161 GPUs of the State have been increased to 171 GPUs informed Gautam. Among the increment of the 10% GPUs, 50% seats are reserved for the Women in the Panchayat election. Almost every procedure has been met except the seat reservation for the different communities he informed.
On the other hand the 93 Zilla Panchayat seats have also been increased to 110 seats this year he informed and added that the Commission on the other had is also mapping its programmes to ease the problems of the voters in the remotest places in the State.
Although the Commission does not have the accurate figure of voters, it is said around 4.50 lacs of voters will cast their vote for the upcoming Panchayat election.
