Gangtok, January 3

The day one of the New Year witnessed frosty and drizzling weather in Sikkim. December 31st recorded a standard weather, but a sudden change in its behavior is witnessed. The maximum temperature recorded yesterday was 11°c and the minimum to 6.2°c. The state shall witness the decrease in the temperature up to 0° says state based metrological department.

Rainfall of 15 ml and the freezing weather culminated snow falls in Nathula, Tsongmo Lake in East Sikkim and the upper belt of North Sikkim.
“Sky remained foggy, no signs of sun , shops full of woolen cloths to display, the people coming out with woolen and fur jackets, coats, sweaters, mufflers, caps, gloves, boots” was the impact of western disturbances in the state. As of now, it seems that the capital has prepared for the extreme chill.

Sikkim, in the month of November had already witnessed pre-winter chill due to the western disturbances and when actual winter arrives with extreme chilliness that too has a reason. Before it was ‘western disturbances’ but now it is ‘cyclone thane’ which hit the Indian southern states, that has augmented extreme chilled weather says metrological department. The foggy and the drizzling weather may remain so for the coming days, they added.

With New Year arrived that too with chilled and drizzling weather, the people of the state seemed to be excited. Huge crowd was witnessed today at the capital. It has been also learnt from the sources that tourists has started flowing in the state. The president of Sikkim Hotels and Restaurants Association Bhanu Pratap Rasailly said “it’s good to witness the inflow of tourists in the state after long time”. Adding further He said that ‘snowfall’ (which can be seen in coming days) will definitely add cherry on top.

Sikkim has been successful in bringing tourists despite of the horrendous incident of 18/9, and the Tourist Fest in its full swing in Darjeeling Kalimpong. The ‘snow fest’ which is scheduled to commence from February in the state smells to be fruitful.
