Sikkim: Tourist dies in car crash, 10 injured

Gangtok, December 26, 2012:

One tourist was killed and 10 others including the driver suffered injuries when a Tsomgo Lake bound taxi slipped 200 ft down the Jawaharlal Nehru Marg on Saturday  afternoon.

Sumi Deka Kaushik (27) from Tezpur, Assam lost her life in the crash which took place between 1 pm and 2 pm at 17th Mile. Her husband Kunal and another Tezpur duo, Mintol Handique and Sathiya Handique sustained injuries, as per theinformation collected from the survivors at STNM hospital where they are being treated. The Tezpur residents had arrived in Gangtok a day before the inscident and were supposed to leave on Tuesday.

The other injured tourists were Mritunjya Kumar (31) and Riki Kumar from Bihar and a Bagchi family from Kolakata – Pradeep (52), Sudasani (48) and Supriya (20). Chaya Sothdua from Kolkata is also among the injured persons.

Driver Aita Bahadur Biswakarma, who sustainedhead injuries, has been forwarded to Central Referral Hospital, 5th Mile, Tadong. Local public and drivers association of Jawaharlal Nehru Marg assisted the Sherathang police in rescuing and transporting the victims to the STNM hospital. Officials from Tourism department and Travel Agents Association of Sikkim (TAAS) representatives are also extending their support to the victims.

TAAS president Satish Bardewa, general secretary Barap Namgyal Bhutia and their team arrived at thehospital to help the injured tourists. “We will bear the treatment expenses here of the victims and also ensure that the body of the unfortunate victim is sent up to Siliguri with full dignity, said Bardewa.

The TAAS office-bearers pointed out that the trip to Tsomgo Lake of these tourists had been booked by the hotel where they had stayed. Though the concerned hotel person is here, there are no representatives of hoteliers association in such a moment where tourists require collective help from all tourism stakeholders, they said.
