President to flag off maiden NE venture at Rashtrapati Bhavan on March 20

Namchi, January 10, 2013

Anand Gurung of Chemchey, South Sikkim will be representing Sikkim in the upcoming ‘1st North East India on top of the World (Mt. Everest) Expedition 2013’, the first of its kind expedition for the eight Northeastern States.

Funded by North Eastern Council (NEC), Shillong, Government of India, the expedition held with the objective to share the experiences of adventure sports to the youths and foster amongst them a spirit of risk taking, is being organised by the Planning department, Government of Manipur through Manipur Mountaineering and Trekking Association.

This scheme of training the young mountaineers includes serving the first generation learners (students and nonstudents alike) of both rural and urban areas. The mission has N. Chinkheinganba a 16 year old boy who on completion of the expedition will be the youngest to scale the Mt. Everest, while Sikkim’s Anand Gurung, 21, will be the second youngest to do so.

Anand, who was selected after a selection trail is working as guest instructor in Indian Himalaya Centre for Adventure and Ecotourism (IHCAE), Chemchey for the past two years.

After completing his schooling at Damthang and Namchi, Anand pursued adventure course from IHCAE in 2009 and later did basic cours from Atal Behari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (AVIMAS), Manali, Himachal Pradesh in 2010.

During his basic course, he was also awarded the ‘best trainee’ and for which Sikkim Tourism also awarded him.

Besides, he completed another advanced mountaineering course from the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling for one month in 2011 and then went for pre-Everest to Manipur in 2012 which was sponsored by North East Council Group.

To commemorate this event, multicolour souvenir with a message from the President of India, Prime Minister of India and Governors and Chief Ministers of the eight NE States will be produced. Considering the uniqueness of the venture, the souvenir, it is informed will be released by

the President of India alongside the flagging off ceremony of this maiden venture at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi on March 20, 2013 in the presence of high level dignitaries and luminaries.
