3rd Open Chess Tournament-2011 from Feb 21

Gangtok, Feb. 6, 2011:

Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) Bhawan trust is all set to organize the “3rd Open Chess Tournament-2011’ at SDF, Bhawan Hall at Indira Byepass from 21st February till 5th March.

The trust has invited the participants from Assam, Nepal, Tripura, Darjeeling, Kurseong, Siliguri and Sikkim apart from others to take part. The championship will be played under FIDE’s laws of chess along with the Swiss system. A total of nine rounds shall be played. In case of a tie up the winner will be decided by the tournament committee.

The trust was established in the year 2001 and is involves itself in social activities, cultural, films, and games stated the tournament Coordinator SDF Bhawan Trust, Kabita Subba in a press conference at SDF Party Hall. It is for the 3rd consecutive term that the trust has been conducting the tournament with an objective of creating opportunities to the local players of state.

Chess Expert and General Secretary of Sikkim Chess Association, Mahendra Dhakal informed that the association is pleased to hold the 3rd tournament of chess in the state and hoped of receiving good response in the days to come. The association has also invited guest players from outside state for exposure to the state players which will also increase the excitement of the game. The meet was chaired by the Treasurer of SDF Bhawan Trust Choegyal Bhutia and Joint Secretary Ashok Kumar Rai. During the meet the association also announced of organizing North East chess tournament at SDF Bhawan hall.

The prizes to be awarded to the winners were also announced. The 1st position, will be awarded with cash prize of Rs. 20,000/-, 2nd- 15,000/-, 3rd – 10,000/-, 4th – 9,000/-, 5th – 8,000/-, 6th -7000/-, 7th -6000/-, 8th -5000/-, 9th -4000/-, 10th -3000/- and 11th till 20th position with 1000/- respectively. In the categories of (Under-11-16-19 years boys and girls), 1st prize Rs.2500/-, 2nd 1500/- and 3rd 1000/- respectively.

The meet also announced that Miss. Sushmita Lama (U-16) won 2nd position and Master Dhiraj Mani Rai 3rd place in recently held “4th North-East Chess Tournament 2011” at Shillong from 24th -31st January where the team was lead by General Secretary of Sikkim Chess Association, Mahendra Dhakal.
