Manipur won eight gold medals yesterday to reach the top of medal’s tally in the ongoing 34th National Games in Jharkhand. Manipur has a total of 41 medals now which include 17 gold. Of the 17 gold Manipur has won, 13 come from Wushu and most of them from women sportspersons.

Manipur clinched two gold in Rowing and one in Wushu on Day III of the 34th National Games, on Tuesday. Manipur’s Priya Devi Changamayum bagged two gold medals when she won the singles and doubles Rowing sculls events. Chaoba Devi Thangjam partnered Priya in the Rowing double sculls (1500m). Manipur clinched their third gold through Sanathoi Devi Yumnam who won the Sanshou 48kgs and below in Wushu. Manipur also bagged one silver in rowing and another in wushu.
Cultural Programmes in the 34th Jharkhand National Games
In a Group ‘B’ match Manipur handed over Tripura a humiliating defeat of 24-0 in women’s football. The stars of Manipur’s rout of Tripura were P H Beena Devi, S Reena Roy and Mandakini. For Manipur, P H Beena Devi scored six goals. S Reena Roy and Mandakini both were on target five times.
Manipur’s performance in the ongoing national games has been phenomenal. On the opening day itself Manipur won 7 Medals including 2 Gold Medals. Manipur was the champion of the last National Games and the Manipur contingent appear determined to defend the Champion title this year as well.
The 1992 born Sapna Devi Yumlembam of Manipur has been phenomenal in her performance winning 4 gold medal till now. From the time Sapna won bronze in the 2009 Asian Martial Arts Games, she has really worked hard. The 18 year 2 month old Wushu star is the youngest women medal winner in the Manipur contingent.
Assam jumped out of its slumber to win five gold medals on day III to reach second among northeastern states. Other northeastern states including Sikkim’s performance remains way below the mark.
