State Wushu team returns with 11 medals

The eleven member team of Sikkim who had participated in the 5th North East Wushu Championship recently held at Manipur from 15th of January to 18th have won eleven medals out of which six are gold, three silver and two bronze medals respectively. The gold medal winners of the state are Miss. Binita Rai, 45kg categories have won 3 gold medals in (Taulo -2 and Sanshu-1), taulo stands for demonstration of Wushu skills and Sanshu is like boxing. Furthermore, Ms. Rai was also nominated as the best fighter of the year during the tournament.

Likewise, Master Rakesh Singh another gold medalist under 32 kg category won one gold medal in Sub-Junior whereas, Master Avisekh Rai won gold medal in Taulo along with Master Som Bahadur Tamang who even won gold medal in Taulo. Similarly, Master Ravi Sharma under 48kg category, Miss Pragya Rai under 36kg categories and Master Mahindra Sharma under 36 category won silver medals. In respect to Bronze medals Master Arun Chettri under 40kg category and Master Som Bahadur Tamang under 44kg category won Bronze medal in Sanshu.

Speaking with media, Chief Coach of SAWA, Mr. Oinam Sanayai Singh informed that during the championship Sikkim state was ranked in 3rd position. Adding further Mr. Singh said that the performance was absolutely fantastic as the target in this championship was of acquiring 10 medals by the players which became a dream come true for his team. Mr. Singh said that the participants taking part in this championship had four new players like Avisekh Rai, Pragya Rai, Arun Rai and Mahindra Sharma who were representating Sikkim state for the first time but adding further coach mentioned that “I am proud of my students as they have done a fabulous job which has touched me emotionally”.

Miss. Binita Rai (gold medalist) expressed her heartfelt happiness while interacting with media today here at Whitehall and she said that, this has been the most memorable moment of her life and would like to give all credit to her coach. Mr. OS Singh for giving the strength for winning and tackling with the game. Ms. Rai also added that, she has also performed in National tournament and has won medals for the state.
