Tadong Government College wall collapsed again

The heavy rainfall in the capital since few days has caused havoc in the periphery of Tadong Government College.

Recently, a month back during the month of May the collapse of college wall during night time catered a huge loss of property of the local residentof the area and within a very short span of time another collapse of wall in the north direction of the college have cracked private buildings adjutant to college wall.

The Sub Divisional Magistrate, Gangtok Mr. AB Karki along with Assistant Engineers ( AE)HRDD Mr. Mahesh Chettri , AE, PHE Mr. Tenzing Lama carried out the inspection of the area and have also taken preventive measures till the monsoon ends to avoid any heavy damages to the nearby houses.

The main cause identified by the inspecting team is said to be the lack of proper drainage facilities in the area causing chocking of Jhoras damaging the wall and the other is the construction works being carried out by the HRD department. The wall measuring 20-30 ft fell down developing heavy cracks in the houses constructed near the wall. A total of six buildings adjacent to the wall are in a very risky situation.

Further more the Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC) Mayor Mr. KN Topgay along with Deputy Mayor Mr. Shakti Singh and the councilors visited that area and has directed the department of Urban Development and Housing Department (UD&HD) to immediately start up the restoration of drainage system of the area to protect the further calamities or damages to the houses in the area.

Furthermore the preventive measures adopted initially are the diversion of sewerages system which is already on the ground carried out by the Department of PHE where as other measures adopted are to destroy the wall hanging caused due to sinking of land in the area, to cover the area with plastic 24hrs a day till monsoon ends and to provide support to the wall with sand bags considering further slides.

Speaking with media the Assistant Engineer, HRDD Mr. Mahesh Chettri informed that there is a provision of strengthening, construction of permanent wall in the area where the construction is currently being carried out but till the monsoon ends the protective, preventive measures will be adopted.

Whereas SDM in regards to the damages caused by the slide said that there are minor damages caused by the slide but if proper preventive measures are not adopted then there are chances of heavy damages in days ahead and considering the same the protective measures have been carried out in full swing by the departments concerned.

Mr. Bharat Basistha owner of the house who was currently alone in the house and whose house has developed cracks due to collapse of wall informed that the construction of the wall by the college authorities was to bar the humans entering the college but instead obstructed the flow of water causing huge loss to our homes adjacent to the wall. Earlier the sewerage waters that use of flow from the top used to be drained from where the wall is constructed today and due to obstruction of flow of drainage water the wall collapsed causing huge damage to the houses constructed nearby.

The houses in threat and immediately effected have developed huge cracks are of Mrs. Geeta Niroula, Mr. Bharat Basistha, Mr. Pemba Sherpa, Mr. BK Tikhatri, Mr. RP Thatal and Mr. Chabilal Lakhey respectively.
