Community disaster management training at Sumbuk

Gangtok, Jan. 21, 2011

Two days training programme on community based disaster management plan was organized from 19th to 20th January 2011 at Govt. Junior High School, Kartikey, Sumbuk, South Sikkim. It was organized by Disaster Management Faculty-Sikkim, G. B. Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development, Sikkim Unit in collaboration with Land Revenue and Disaster Management Department, Govt. of Sikkim. The training programme was supported by National Institute of Disaster Management (Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India).

The main speaker of the training programme was Ashok Kumar Sharma, Disaster Management Faculty-Sikkim who presented different power point presentation and video to explain about disasters, different types of disaster happing in Sikkim state, safety measures and how to manage the disasters in community level. Mr. Sharma said that earthquakes can happen anytime, anyplace so, be prepared both before and after, learn First Aid and prepare Disaster Kit.

In the second day, all participants prepared the ward level map and also presented the map group wise highlighting hazards place, resources available etc. All participants also participated in the open discussion for disasters and safety measures Mr. Sharma explained how to make the planning for seasonal natural and manmade disasters.

Mr. Ashok Lohar, Panchayat Member, Ms. Santi Pradhan Panchayat Secretary of Sumbuk Kartikey GPU and Mr. S. B. Pradhan, Teacher of Kartikey Junior High School also explained disaster management. The programme was concluded by vote of thanks by Mrs. Kamala Pradhan, ASHA worker. The training programme was participated by more than 60 participants comprising of Panchayat members, Panchayat Secreatry, Ex.-Panchayat members, ASHA & Aganwari worker, villagers, and teachers.
