The sixth open marathon for men and women on the theme “Run for Aids” was organized at Dikchu in East Sikkim on the occasion of World Aids Day by Dikchu Youth Welfare Association (DYWA) and was sponsored by NHPC Teesta Stage V Hydro Electricity Project.
The events was attended by Hon’ble Minister for Urban Development and Housing Department, Shri, DB Thapa as the chief guest and Hon’ble Minister for Power and Energy Shri Sonam Gyatso Lepcha and area MLA Tumin Lingee constituency as guests. The marathon was run over 21 kms for men and 14 kms for women. A total of around ninety seven participants from all over the state and abroad took part in the competition.
The first position for men was taken by Nim Tshering Tamang of Enchey SSS followed by second position Sher Bahadur Chettri of Gangtok and third position by Leela Pradhan of Enchey SSS. Similarly, in women category, the first position was taken by Sarita Sunwar of Soreng West Sikkim, second position by Dawkit Lepcha of Lower Dzongu and third position by Chandra Rai of Kambal, East Sikkim.
The winners of the marathon were awarded with cash prizes, trophies and certificates. Also present on the day were Mrs. Lhakila Tongden Lepcha (Member of State Planning Commission), Mr. AK Choudhary (Chief Engineer NHPC), Dr. Tshering Ongmu Bhutia (MO IC/ Dikchu PHC), Dr. RB Biswakarma (Assistant Director, Sports and Youth Affairs Deptt), General Manager SKPPL, AK Dutta, panchayat and zilla members, Principal and staffs of different schools and the general public.
